Michelle Smith

The University of Texas at Austin’s Teach for America recruitment team is continuing our 2018 Corps Member features! We’re highlighting some of the fantastic individuals who have signed on as corps members in order to shed some light on an organization that focuses on eliminating educational inequity once and for all.

Today’s featured member is Michelle Smith.  Michelle, a senior from Midland, Texas, majored in Youth & Community studies with a concentration in Early Childhood Education. At UT, she has been most notably involved in YoungLife, where she served as a leader for middle school students in Lake Travis.

Michelle will be teaching Elementary school in Dallas/Fort Worth next fall. Michelle was inspired to get involved with Teach For America because working with underrepresented students is something she has always had a heart for. She believes it is a great combination of her passions for social work and education. Teach For America not only aligns with Michelle's personal values, but also, is the perfect test of her major.

After her two year commitment to Teach For America, Michelle thinks she will stay in the classroom. Following her time teaching, she hopes to pursue educational psychology and become a counselor or a educational psychologist specializing in students with special needs. After what she know will be an informative experience, Michelle says "I will see where the wind takes me, but these are the paths that I am interested in!"

In her post-grad job search, Michelle applied to many different positions, all with distinct application formats. She found Teach For America's application to be efficient, organized, and clear with their expectations, making the experience one of the more enjoyable ones!

Michelle's advice for Longhorns considering the program? "Look into it! I can already tell that Teach For America is a great program that stands out from others like it. Even though the 2018 corps members have not started the real work yet, TFA has already taken care of us well. It gives you a network that is really caring. Teach For America is a great option to understand the impact of education and how to grow from there."
